I know both are two different things but I want to know is it possible
to use them as alternatives for each other?
Once I mistakenly added baking powder instead of baking soda to a dish,
I dont think it went wrong. Just want to make sure its okay to use them
both.

Thanks!

They really aren't interchangeable. Banking powder has baking soda
plus several other ingredients in it.

Good Eats with Alton Brown on FoodTV has several episodes where he
explains the chemistry behind baking powder and baking soda.

Both baking powder and baking soda chemical rippers that cause batters
to rise when baked. Baking powder increases the bubbles that are already
present in the dough product made by churning ingredients.
